Former Chowan County Commissioner James Elton Taylor, 55, died Jan. 30, at Albemarle Hospital in Eliza beth City, NC. He was past general manager of the Qhowan Credit Union. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Chowan County Manager Cliff Copeland noted that “With the passing of Jim Tay lor, Chowan County lost a valuable public servant and I lost a friend. He served as a County Commissioner for 12 years, two of them as chair-, man. He also served on the Edenton-Chowan Board of Education. Under his leader James Taylor ship, he initiated many pro grams that will benefit the residents of this county for a long, longtime.” On a personal note, Cope land added, “Jim was so ex cited about moving into his new house, sb it is certainly a shame that he was able to en joy this new house for such a short period of time. From what I understand he suffered greatly the last couple of months, so at least now he is at peace.” County Commission Chair man Louis Belfield echoed Copeland’s sentiments. “I have lost a good friend whose en couragement, counsel and wis dom meant a greal deal to me over the years,” Belfield said. “Jim will long be remembered for his many contributions to the citizens of Edenton and Chowan County” “He was a committed and tireless worker,” Belfield added, “who dedicated himself to making positive changes in education, government and in the community. He strongly urged all people to register and vote and worked for diverse representation on local, state and national levels of govern ment. The community feels a keen sense of loss in his pass ing.” Another commissioner, Wayne Goodwin, remem . bered Taylor on Monday as “a very professional and straightforward commis sioner... who had the strength and wisdom to fight for what he thought was best for Cho wan County James was a per son who would let you know up front what he stood for.” James Taylor was born in Chowan County on July 6, v 1947, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Henry Taylor. BY REBECCA BUNCH Editor Edenton police continue searching for a suspect in the lunchtime robbery of Gateway Bank in Edenton Monday. According to Police Chief Greg Bonner, the suspect is believed to be a black male, about 6 ft. 2 inches tall, who was wearing camouflage cloth ing, a floppy-style camouflage hat and sunglasses. Chief Bonner said that po lice received a call at about 12:18 p.m. Monday that a rob ber had entered the Gateway Bank adjacent to Winn-Dixie a short time?* earlier, haftded a note to the teller requesting money, and indicating he had a weapon, although he never produced it. After the teller gave him the money from her bank drawer, the suspect left the bank and was gone by the time police could get there. The Same man, Bonner said, is believed to have pulled off another robbery shortly there, after, this time at the First Citi zens Bank in Elizabeth City. Sgt. Tint Hickman of the Edenton Police Department is heading the investigation of the-Gateway robbery. • .“We would appreciate hear ing from anyone who may have been at the shopping cen ter Monday around noon, and who may have seen this person and the vehicle he left in,” said Chief Bonner. Dowd, a former mayor, has also served this community as a teacher, businessman and civic leader. Holmes High School seniors among 600 regional finalists for its pres tigious scholarship program. Allison Britton, Will Hollo well, Jim Mills and Judson Smith were among those cho sen from about 2,000 Teaching Fellow candidates throughout the state. “I can’t say I’m surprised,” said Edenton-Chowan Schools Superintendent Allan T. These sessions allow interested residents to further work through issues and concerns re lated to the Woodlawn Community and at the same time strengthen their leadership ability enabling them to effec tively function in leadership roles beyond the community.
